just to conclude the In Memoriam theme, a quick recap of those this world's without as of the past couple weeks. all photos courtesy Google. (i know that's lazy, but i smoke the most when i write, & i'm trying not to smoke, so posting may be a bit spasmodic for awhile.)

Saul Bellow, author, 1915-2005

Robert Creeley, poet, 1926-2005

I Know a Man
As I sd to my
friend, because I am
always talking, John, I
sd, which was not his
name, the darkness sur-
rounds us, what
can we do against
it, or else, shall we &
why not, buy a goddamn big car,
drive, he sd, for
christ's sake, look
out where yr going.
(Collected Poems 132)

Pope John Paul II, 1920 - 2005

who will fill popey's shoes?

& yes, Hunter S. Thompson's ashes will be shot out of a cannon, which will be clenched in the gonzo fist. this is happening sometime in August.

I held it truth, with him who sings
To one clear harp in divers tones,
That men may rise on stepping-stones
Of their dead selves to higher things.

But who shall so forecast the years

And find in loss a gain to match?
Or reach a hand thro’ time to catch
The far-off interest of tears?

Let Love clasp Grief lest both be drown’d,
Let darkness keep her raven gloss:
Ah, sweeter to be drunk with loss,
To dance with death, to beat the ground,

Than that the victor Hours should scorn
The long result of love, and boast,
‘Behold the man that loved and lost,
But all he was is overworn.’

Alfred Lord Tennyson, "In Memoriam A.H.H."

Saul Bellow....I always loved the sound of his name, its very rhythmic. I can't recall reading any of his work, however.

Great poem by Tennyson, he's my favorite poet!

good luck with the quitting-smoking-thing. let me know your secret. i too have this problem of the non-stop dangling of a lit cigarette when writing.

Hunter S. Thompson is one of a kind. We will not see the likes of him again in this world.
