celebrate that Edgar Allan Poe was born today, 197 years ago.
Spirits of the Dead
Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.
Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.
The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.
Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.
The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

he has a big head and a strange mustache.
Happy birthday Mr. Poe! Great poem!
Such beautiful sentiments.
Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness
Yes, I feel that too.
Lo! Death has reared himself a throne
In a strange city lying alone
Far down within the dim West,
Where the good and the bad and the worst and the best
Have gone to their eternal rest.
There shrines and palaces and towers
(Time-eaten towers that tremble not!)
Resemble nothing that is ours.
Around, by lifting winds forgot,
Resignedly beneath the sky
The melancholy waters he.

did anyone click on the "celebrate" link? it's a news bit about a mysterious man who visits Poe's grave every year on his birthday...
I read about this year's visit somewhere else. Just imagine the dedication the first person had, year after year, then to have passed the torch on to his sons. I have a ton of respect for them.
Too bad a stinking bunch of f-ups tried to screw it up this time. People are such trash sometimes.
hey sock, don't judge a man by the fashion conventions of his time, dammit.
(you're right about the oversized cranium, though.)
& it's just that people don't understand memorials, sometimes. which can be the point.
i.e. "time-eaten towers that tremble not..."
That artilce about the yearly visitor was fascinating. Its annoying that so many are trying to find out who it is...isn't there something to be said for having a little mystery in life?
at the same time i understand their curiosity. i'm pretty curious myself. why cognac? for example.
