a fish for a monkey

Spring and All
William Carlos Williams

By the road to the contagious hospital
under the surge of the blue
mottled clouds driven from the
northeast-a cold wind. Beyond, the
waste of broad, muddy fields
brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen

patches of standing water
the scattering of tall trees

All along the road the reddish
purplish, forked, upstanding, twiggy
stuff of bushes and small trees
with dead, brown leaves under them
leafless vines--

Lifeless in appearance, sluggish
dazed spring approaches--

They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind--

Now the grass, tomorrow
the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf
One by one objects are defined--
It quickens: clarity, outline of leaf

But now the stark dignity of
entrance--Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted, they
grip down and begin to awaken

I simply love trees and that was a great poem!!! Reading it in today's spring-like weather makes the imagery come alive.

I am forwarding a link to this to a friend of mine at work who is a fellow tree lover.

Have you ever seen this book?:

Its amazing...and has some wonderful trees in addition to wonderful tree houses.

I really love this stanza "They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind--"

and the last.

Reading it again I have LOTR tree imagery in my head.

wcw is such a badass.

I think good poetry has to do, for one thing, with knowing when to go for broke, and when to hold back. this one hits it.

I agree with carl... "uncertain of all / save that they enter" is an amazing line.

I can so -not- write poetry myself...

very few of us will ever become a William Carlos Williams, whether we write decent verse or not...

Well, I have no head for poetry but I like it. Here's my contribution...

Poem

As the cat
climbed over
the top of

the jamcloset
first the right
forefoot

carefully
then the hind
stepped down

into the pit of
the empty
flowerpot.
